Making up the world’s largest minority, some 1 billion people worldwide currently live with a disability. This number means one in every seven people on earth is impacted by a disability. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was created to raise awareness of the social, economic, political and cultural aspects of disabilities and how they affect the lives of billions of people worldwide.

Shade structures are very common — so common in fact, that you probably don't even notice when you see one. They are found everywhere, from playgrounds and sports courts to high schools and car dealerships. There's a reason shade structures are pretty common … it's because of all the advantages they bring to any outdoor area.

May Recreation recently had the privilege of working with Johnson Development on the new Jordan Ranch master-planned community in Fulshear, Texas. The custom playground design we helped plan and build for the community is a mix of some of our favorite components and structures, offering a wide range of activities in which children can indulge.

Kids these days have the best of everything. With the caliber of toys, gadgets, technology and entertainment at their fingertips, it can be pretty hard to get kids to participate in some good, old-fashioned outdoor play. Having an exceptional, custom playground that stands out from all the others is a sure way to get kids interested and outside.

One of the first steps when building a playground is to review and define your objectives. Is the goal to promote physical activity for students at a school? Enhance a neighborhood park to appeal to families and residents? Create a destination playground that brings people together?

If one of your main goals is to create a gathering place that gets people talking, brings them together and keeps them coming back you’ll want a playground that stands out. Something different than every other park out there. Something that honors your community or enhances nearby elements. Perhaps a theme playground is in order.
